Research Interests

Dr. Valhmu is director of the Division of Orthopedic Surgery's Biosciences Laboratory. His general research interest encompasses the molecular and regulatory mechanisms of the normal and pathological development of diarthrodial joints. Specific areas of research include the molecular etiology of osteoarthritis, identification and characterization of nuclear factors that control chondrocyte differentiation/dedifferentiation, transcriptional regulation of the expression of cartilage extracellular matrix genes, and mechanisms of mechanical signal transduction in chondrocytes.
