Message from the Chairman
Dear Applicant, Thanks for your interest in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at the University of Wisconsin. We encourage you to consider joining us. We believe that you will find the experience here in Madison to be singularly excellent. We pride ourselves in training orthopedic surgeons in an atmosphere that is not only rigorous and structured, but collegial and supportive as well. Our full-time clinical faculty encompass all of the orthopedic subspecialties. Their interests are joint replacement, trauma, hand, spine, sports medicine, pediatrics, foot and ankle, and orthopedic oncology. Residents are exposed to the full breadth of these cutting edge subspecialty practices throughout their training. You will also have exposure to active and successful research programs. The faculty currently holds extramural funding for biomedical and biomechanical research from the Veterans Administration, the NIH, the Whitaker Foundation, OREF, and several corporations. Residents have been involved in research projects in spinal biomechanics, hip arthroplasty, fracture biomechanics, soft tissue healing, cartilage repair, and disc cell culture. Over the past ten years, the residents at the University of Wisconsin as a group have placed in the top 10% on the orthopedic in-training examination. Ninety-nine percent of our graduates have passed their oral and written boards on their first attempt. Roughly half of our graduates pursue further training with the fellowship of their choice, the remainder feel perfectly comfortable in entering general Orthopedic practice with confidence. The orthopedic faculty are strongly committed to education and are directly involved with all aspects of your training. We pride ourselves on the high level of faculty - resident interaction; both formal and casual. We work side by side with residents to assure that each graduate of our program is an excellent surgeon -- skilled not only in the technical aspects of surgery, but also knowledgeable in the cognitive aspects of the decision-making process. As a graduate of our program you will feel confident in your ability to independently perform a wide variety of complex procedures. Our residents represent the best of their graduating medical school classes. We welcome you to consider this select group of physicians and invite you to talk with us about our program. Sincerely,
