Karen Patterson, PT, MS, PCS
Why I am a Physical Therapist, and Why I Teach Physical TherapyI originally went to school for Athletic Training and then worked in the field for 6 years at the college level. I found myself becoming more interested in the rehabilitation aspect and thus returned to school to pursue Physical Therapy. It was there that I found my love of working with children and their family. This has brought great joy, challenge, growth and inspiration to my life. I now find it extremely rewarding and a privilege to be able to share this with PT students. Education
Courses Taught
Clinical InterestsCurrently I work in acute care Pediatrics at the University of Wisconsin Children’s Hospital. I have been fortunate to work in many different pediatric settings but I currently have a strong interest in working with children in a hospital and how Physical Therapists can meet the needs of the children and their families in the medical environment. I also have been able to work with children in different cultures and this continues to be an interest of mine. Professional Activities
Research InterestsI am currently involved in research study involving children with Spinal Muscular Atrophy investigating medication effects on strength and functional abilities. I am also interested in research involving different cultures, evidence based practice in the pediatric acute care setting and the role of PT in children going through cancer treatment. Personal InterestsEnjoy cycling, golf, “vintage” basketball, soccer and travel that preferably involves one of the fore mentioned activities.
