Learning Objectives

  • Review peripheral and central anatomical pain pathways.
  • Understand peripheral and central pain mechanisms in acute nociceptive and neuropathic pain states.
  • Know the pharmacology, principles, and use of analgesic and other drug therapies in pain.
  • Evaluate role of electrodiagnostics and imaging techniques in pain management.
  • Discuss assessment and management of postoperative pain and common chronic pain states.
  • Understand the treatment of pain in special populations (ie, pediatrics, geriatrics, cancer, pregnant and nursing women, and individuals with substance abuse).
  • Describe classification, assessment, and management of headaches, complex regional pain, and neuropathic pain states.
  • Review anatomy, indications, and contraindications for regional blocks.
  • Discuss ethical and medico-legal issues related to pain medicine, DEA regulations pertaining to prescribing schedule II and III drugs, record keeping, and quality assurance.
