Confronting the Problem of Complex Pain

Dr RudinThe burden of chronic pain often includes both functional deficits and emotional dysfunction related directly to patients’ pain. For such patients, the most effective treatment model has proven to be a structured approach employing the skills of experts from various disciplines. Working together, the treatment team develops and carries out a coherent treatment plan, based on thorough evaluation, careful diagnosis and clearly stated treatment goals and expectations for both the patient and the treatment team. When the patient has responded well to the treatment plan and is considered stable, his or her care will be returned to the primary (referring) physician for long-term follow-up.

The goals of the UW Pain Treatment and Research Center are to reduce or eliminate pain and improve patient well-being, physical function and independence.

The Center brings together the complementary skills of :

Physiatrists (rehabilitation physicians) Neurologists
Registered nurses Nurse practitioners
Psychologists Psychiatrists
Physical and Occupational therapists Pharmacists

The treatment team meets to review all information gathered from each patient and develop an individualized treatment plan.
