Miroslav Backonja, MD, Education and Research Director
Dr. Backonja is a neurologist with special interests in pain physiology and the treatment of pain syndromes. A graduate of the University of Zagreb, he completed his residency and a fellowship in pain management at the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics. A widely respected clinician and researcher, Dr. Backonja is associate professor of neurology and anesthesiology at UW Medical School.

Douglas Dulli, MD
Dr. Dulli, a neurologist, practices in both the Stroke and Headache Clinics. His particular interests include advanced stroke treatment, clinical trials of thrombolytics, and headache treatment. Dr. Dulli received his medical degree at the University of Vermont and completed an internship, residency and fellowship at the UW Hospital and Clinics.

Ms. Fahlstrom’s background includes experience in critical care, hemodialysis, ambulatory procedures, psychiatry, and a variety of UW Health outpatient clinics. She has special interests in neuropathic care and patient education.

Maureen Frawley, RN, BSN
Ms. Frawley practices in the Ambulatory Procedure Center, where she assists with nerve blocks and other pain-management procedures. She has extensive experience in trauma and critical-care nursing and spent several years in home health care before joining the pain-management staff.

Debra Henn, RN, BSN
Ms. Henn has a background in ob/gyn, pediatric, medical-surgical, rehabilitation, psychiatric, and occupational-health nursing. Her special interests include providing patient education and developing a support group to help patients cope effectively with the impact of chronic pain on their lives.

W. Steven Hughes, RN
Mr. Hughes is experienced in rehabilitation, neurology and home health care. He works in both the Headache Clinic and the Pain Program, and has special interest in the management of migraine headache and neuropathic pain.

Steven Krause, PhD, Staff Psychologist
Dr. Krause, a clinical psychologist, completed an internship in clinical psychology at the University of California-San Francisco and a fellowship in behavioral medicine and pain management at the University of Cincinnati. His special interest is in rehabilitation.

Ms. Kunz, a certified family nurse practitioner, has an extensive background in trauma and critical-care nursing. Her special interests include treatment of pain syndromes and patient education.

Nel Lemmenes, RN, MS
Ms. Lemmenes is the clinic manager for the pain and headache program. She has a master’s degree in nursing administration. Her interests are in program planning, assisting with pain procedures, and helping complex patients find the best way to meet their goals. She also has extensive patient-care experience working with ICU/trauma, emergency department, and ambulatory-care patients.

Shilagh A. Mirgain, PhD, Staff Psychologist
Shilagh A. Mirgain, PhD completed her graduate training at the University of Illinois at Urbana- Champaign, her clinical internship at the University of Wisconsin's Department of Psychiatry, and her postdoctoral fellowship at Stanford University's Department of Psychiatry, Behavioral Medicine Clinic. Her special interests include pain management, adjusting and coping with medical illness/injuries, biofeedback, stress management, behavioral medicine, couples treatment, women's issues, and psychotherapy.

Nathan Rudin, MD, MA, Medical Director
A graduate of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Dr. Rudin completed his residency in physical medicine and rehabilitation at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago. He joined the UW faculty in 2001 as an assistant professor of rehabilitation medicine after five years on the Johns Hopkins faculty. Dr. Rudin’s research interests include musculoskeletal and neuropathic pain disorders, particularly fibromyalgia, and rehabilitation outcomes. Dr. Rudin is board-certified in physical medicine and rehabilitation, pain medicine, and electrodiagnostic medicine.

Suzanne Seeger, MD
Susanne Seeger, MD is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Neurology. She
graduated from Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt, Germany,
and completed her Neurology residency and fellowship at the UW Hospital
and Clinics in Madison, Wisconsin. Her interests in Neurology include headache disorders, stroke, epilepsy and neuromuscular disorders. She sees patients in the UW Headache Clinic twice a week.

Nalini Sehgal, MD, Interventional Services Director
Dr. Sehgal is an assistant professor of rehabilitation medicine at UW Medical School. She is particularly interested in diagnostic and therapeutic interventional therapies. A graduate of JLN Medical College in Ajmer, India, she completed her internship and residency training at the Medical College of Wisconsin and a fellowship in interventional pain management and rehabilitation in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

Nicholas Stanek, MD
Nicholas Stanek, MD is an Associate Professor of Neurology. A native Badger, he graduated from the University of Wisconsin Medical School, and completed his Neurology training at Wilford Hall USAF Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas. Dr. Stanek is interested in migraine and the history of neurology. He sees patients in the UW Headache Program two days per week. He evaluates and offers medical therapies for patients with headache disorders of various types.

Ms. Woodford has experience in nursing administration, learning disabilities, internal medicine, rheumatology, ambulatory procedures and rehabilitation. Her special interests include patient education, pain-control implant management, and coordination of care (including community services).
