Residents in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation undergo 3 years of specialty training following an internship year. Applicants apply separately for internship and for PM&R residency.

Internship: Residents in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation undergo 3 years of specialty training following an internship year. Internship must be completed at an accredited graduate medical education training institution. Internship requirements include completion of an accredited transitional residency or at least 6 months in accredited training in internal medicine, family medicine, emergency medicine, obstetrics-gynecology, pediatrics, or surgery; or any combination of these patient care experiences. The remaining months of this year may include any combination of accredited specialties or subspecialties. Applicants apply separately for internship and for PM&R residency.

Residency: Teaching is primarily provided by faculty members in the Department of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation, Division of Rehabilitation Medicine. Most training takes place at facilities operated in Madison, WI by UW Health, the University of Wisconsin’s affiliated health network. Additional locations include regional community outreach clinics, the state-run pediatrics facility at Central Wisconsin Center in Madison, and Gundersen Lutheran Hospital in LaCrosse, WI. Opportunities for training in additional settings can be arranged with approval of the Residency Director.

Rotations: Rotations during the 3 years of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation residency are each 3 months in length. All rotations are based in Madison, WI, with the exception of the rotation at Gundersen Lutheran Hospital in La Crosse, WI.
