Our ResearchResearch in the Division of Sports Medicine investigates the development, maturation, and aging of musculoskeletal tissues, with a particular emphasis on understanding and treating orthopedic diseases and injuries. These issues are addressed on a molecular level (biochemistry, molecular biology), cellular level (cell biology, tissue engineering, gene engineering), as well as on a macroscopic level (biomechanics, clinical outcome). Basic research is performed in a synergistic collection of laboratories called the Wisconsin Orthopedic Research Laboratories. An active group of surgeons, scientists and students are investigating issues in spine surgery (fusion techniques, instrumentation systems as well as gene and tissue engineering strategies), limb lengthening, prosthetic wear debris, tissue healing, cell signalling in chondrocytes, tissue mechanics and micromechanics, thermochondroplasty, fatigue fracture and muscle-tendon junction injury.
