Educational Conferences

The Department of Orthopedic Surgery holds educational conferences several times each week from July through June of each academic year.

Monday 6:45 a.m. Basic Science Conference Weekly
Tuesday 6:30 a.m. Indications Conference Weekly
Wednesday 6:30 a.m. Trauma Conference Weekly
Wednesday 7:15 a.m. Grand Rounds Weekly
Thursday 6:30 a.m. Indications Conference Weekly
Thursday 6:30 a.m. Mortality and Morbidity Monthly
Thursday Evening Journal Club Monthly
Friday 6:30 a.m. Professors Hour Monthly

Attendance is mandatory for Journal Club, Basic Science and Grand Rounds. To remain in good standing residents must maintain a 70% attendance record each quarter based on the combined average of Grand Rounds and Journal Club. Basic Science attendance is averaged separately.

Grand Rounds: Grand Rounds are held each Wednesday morning following the Trauma Conference and are an important part of the resident education program. They allow a resident to focus on a topic of interest (hopefully stimulated by a clinical case), research the topic, and present it to a group of orthopedic surgeons. They also provide an opportunity for the staff to educate the residents on how to prepare effective presentations. Each conference lasts about 30-45 minutes. The format each week includes the presentation of a topic usually by residents under the guidance and supervision of faculty members. Orthopedic faculty, fellows and guest speakers present at approximately as well. The target audience includes orthopedic faculty, residents, fellows and local orthopedists.

Basic Science Conferences: The basic science instruction allows residents to be both student and teacher. Residents attend the Basic Science Conferences throughout their five-year term in the program. During their PG-2 and PG-4 year there is a ten-week Research Rotation (Basic Science), when the resident is free from clinical responsibility. Subjects include: pathology, biomechanics, anatomy and other basic sciences related to the musculoskeletal system.

Indications and M & M Conferences: Tuesday and Thursday Indication Conferences. The most senior resident on a given service is responsible for the quality of the presentations by all members of that service. The last Thursday of the month is for a detailed M & M (Mortality and Morbidity) conference with x-rays.

Wednesday A.M. Trauma Conferences: Will cover all trauma cases of the week and any other recent trauma case of interest. Emphasis is placed on complicated cases for which staff input is sought in order to facilitate management.

Journal Club Meetings are usually held on the third Thursday of every month and take place at one of the faculty member's home. The presentation format for these meetings involves the discussion and review of topics and issues from the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery (JBJS) and other orthopedic journals as designated by the hosting person.

Professors Hour: Once a month the Chairman will gather with all residents for an hour to discuss educational issues and topics of general interest such as ethics, program changes and items of concern to the residents.
