Division of Orthopedic Surgery: Spine Fellowship

Goals & Characteristics

The goal of the fellowship is to train well-rounded academic spine surgeons, placing emphasis equally on clinical experience and research. The clinical experience includes all aspects of both operative and non-operative treatment of a wide variety of spinal disorders. This includes evaluation of cervical, thoracic , and lumbar disorders, including trauma, infection, neoplasm, degenerative conditions, deformities, and complex revision/reconstruction patients.

A major responsibility of the Fellow will be interacting with and teaching both orthopedic residents and medical students. This will include organizing the city-wide spine conference.

One and one-half days per week will be dedicated to basic science research. This will include participation in ongoing biomechanics projects, as well as the opportunity to pursue individual interests on a variety of spine research topics. It is anticipated that the fellow will attend and present at spine society meetings during the year.

Duration & Stipend

Fellows will work under the direction of Division of Orthopedic Surgery faculty Dr. Thomas A. Zdeblick, Dr. Clifford B. Tribus and Dr. Paul Anderson.

The fellowship is one year in duration, running from August 1 through July 31 of the following year. Compensation and benefits are equal to that of a PGY-6 resident. The fellowship is located at the University of Wisconsin Hospital & Clinics and the William S. Middleton Veterans Administration Hospital in Madison, Wisconsin. Both medical centers are located on the campus of the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
